An article published in the London times today brings up the possibility that the use of nicotine replacement therapy may carry a higher cancer risk than previously thought. It has always been assumed that NRT was potentially harmful, but that it was much better than smoking cigarettes considering as nicotine doesn’t seem to be nearly as dangerous as the many stronger carcinogens found in burning tobacco products. However what has now been discovered is that the use of the nicotine replacements such as stop smoking patches, nicotine gum and the nicotine inhaler may be more of a health hazard than feared.

A new study out of the University of London, has found that a genetic mutation which can cause mouth cancer can be worsened by the nicotine levels found in stop smoking products. Its too early to tell if smokers should be worried about the risk from these products but we can be sure that the cancer risk will still be much lower for a nicotine gum user when to compared to someone who continues to smoke cigarettes.

Its hard to say exactly what this means for those of use who use the E Cigarette as a nicotine replacement therapy. After reading the article my stance is pretty much as it has always, E Cigarettes are probably not the healthiest product on the market and should not be seen as a long term replacement for tobacco cigarettes. At the same time, using an E Cigarette for a few months as a stepping stone to becoming nicotine free is infinitely preferable to continuing to smoke and is currently the best way to quit smoking we have.

You might say that its easy to find a successful Stop Smoking Aid on the market, but which of them really offers a genuinely high chance of helping you stop. My guess is that the majority of people who manage to use most current NRT products would have been able to stop with or without their use. If you think about it, all they do is keep you addicted to nicotine without giving you the comfort of the physically smoking. That’s what sets the e cig apart from nicotine patches and gums and why its far more successful in helping us stop even if we continue to be addicted to this product instead.

No matter how bad they might tell vaping is in the media, there is no way you are going to convince the majority of the public that they even approach the dangers we are all to aware of in tobacco products.

The rest of the stop smoking industry isn’t really worth discussing either in my humble opinion. Quit Smoking Hypnosis has never worked for anyone I’ve talked to about it. Some feel after their session that they are free from their nicotine addiction but they all seem to end up back on the cigarettes a few months later. Most of the stop smoking books at your local bookshop and support groups are just as ineffective.

The only exception to the rule would be Allan Carr’s “Easy Way To Stop Smoking” technique which undoubtedly works for many smokers but there will always be those who are unwilling to take the effort to attend a course of read his book and for those people the e cigarette is the perfect option.

Hopefully that headline caught your attention if you are at all interested in E Cigarettes. Thankfully, as anyone who has tried one knows the E cigarette isn’t only safe but it can dramatically improve the health of anyone who substitutes the E cigarette for regular tobacco cigarettes. However an article I found in the Daily Mail reckons the nicotine cartridges that come with the E cigarette could potentially be harmful or lethal if swallowed by young children. The lesson is to treat the Electronic cigarette the same as you would your regular tobacco products and keep them well out of reach of children.

I saw one Electronic Cigarette company advertising their products to trade customers in a Scottish Licensed Trade magazine a couple of weeks ago and wondered if it would catch on. The biggest problem I foresaw was that landlords were obviously going to have to sell the cigarettes at a much higher price than we are used to paying online if a profit was to be made. Parting with £25 for a starter kit over the internet when you have access to all the research you could ask for is one thing. Taking a £40 hit on a product you’ve never tried and have heard little about when you can buy a packet of £6 smokes from the machine in the corner is another thing altogether.

Having said that, its looks like a number of pubs in the UK have decided the E Cigarette may be worth a shot. Perhaps with the effect of the indoor smoking ban and the credit crunch showing no sign of abating, the E cig is an easy way to entice customers back to the bar. Hopefully as the chill of the winter season starts to bite and more people start to grumble about the thought of stepping outside for a fly puff, pubs will realise that the E Cigarette will provide a welcome boost to their falling turnover. With a little luck the Electronic Cigarette may just become a common sight behind the bar, right next to the crisps and peanuts.
