Hey CD,

That's awesome to hear that you've managed to stop smoking cigarettes after 32 years of puffing away :D

I've noticed a big difference in my breathing as well since I switched over from analogues. I think the fact you are inhaling smoke with tobacco is as bad for you as any of the other poisonous chemicals that's in it, so vapor is obviously going to do a lot less damage to the heart and lungs.

Are you in Australia CD? What brand of e cig are you using over there?

Yip, it does appear to be an extremely disorganized industry at the moment from the outside. I suppose we can hope there is stuff doing on in the background with the companies which might help us over the next couple of years but I'm not holding my breath.

I get the feeling that our best bet might be to make the e cigarette so popular with the millions of smokers that it can't be ignored any longer. If you have 20 million people vaping instead of using tobacco then the industry is going to be worth a lot of money, and politically it would be harder to knock it on the head.

Thanks a lot for the blogroll link.

Yeah, I think the problem is the industry is just way too disorganized. You have a lot of Asian manufacturers running around all over the place, and then tons of small businesses at the reseller level. Sure there's a few big players out there like Blu, Greensmoke, Volcano, TW and a couple others, but even then comparatively, it's just a drop in the bucket from a lobbying standpoint.

I think what needs to happen (and it may be unlikely) is that all of these interests need to band together and form an industry group. Big tobacco does it, pharma does it, that's why they are in a position to crush e-cigs right now.

BTW, welcome back! I'm going to stick your feed in my blog roll here in a minute.

Yeah, I agree Steve, this could definitely be problematic for the e cigarette. As we all know money talks and when the tobacco companies get this product ready for market you can be sure they will be using their vast stockpiles of cash created by killing their clients to get this into smoker's hands any way they can.

Once they get the testing done to prove that it's less harmful than smoking tobacco cigarettes I can't see the FDA standing in their way, even is a little cash needs to change hands to loosen up the regulations. It's a pity the electronic cigarette companies don't have the clout to get their products recognized as a less harmful cigarette replacement. Having said that, I hear that some of the retailers, including Green Smoke, have started the testing process so there is some light at the end of the tunnel if the e cig companies can learn to pull their resources.

This story sort of intrigues, but mostly terrifies me. So tobacco companies are getting in the reduced harm game, but they are backing a different horse in the race. Granted this is in the UK, so who knows how this will play out with the FDA, but, if they actually throw down the dough to get this thing approved as a cessation device, I think we as vapers are going to have a problem on our hands.

With a wholly-owned "safe alternative" directly competing with e-cigs, that will give the well-funded tobacco loby a huge gun to start taking pot-shots at the underfunded and vastly disorganized electronic cigarette industry.

I started e-cigs May 6 2011 - after some 32 years approx of smoking the analogues..I have found it to be quite thought provoking really..where you think about what your actually doing way more than I ever did having a puff! The change has been brilliant as I have not returned to my Winfield Golds at all - and in my mind I may give it all up or I may just stay e-cig happy - but it's has importantlystopped the weeze at night when I'm set to sleep -I feel like I can breath more and with interest I will watch this wacky world go about the politics of tearing it down.Good luck as I will 'vape' as I listen.on ya e-cigs.CD

I have to say that reading your article has made feel better about buying an electronic cigarette. I do believe the risks involved using E Cig are less than that of smoking cigarettes. To get away from the nicotine is the ultimate goal. Having said that I am hoping to lessen the NRT gradually until I don't need it anymore, however getting off the nicotine isn't the hard part of quitting for me, its the hand to mouth thing that is hard to shake. I, like most people I know, turn to food to replace the smoking activity that you did with your hands. I don't want to do that because weight gain has its own health issues and I am already at risk, being overweight already. So I thank you! You helped me make this decision with E cig. I hope the it works for me and my husband. We have been trapped by this bad habit way to long.

I absolutely agree on what had you written here in the blog comments, most people cant stop their smoking habits so this e-cigarette is the best option for them. They can gradually decrease their smoking and in no time it will be no hard for them to quit smoking.

colinthebronc we are all beside out selves that you quit smoking without e-cigarettes. Why do we need them?
Simply put we need them because they save lives. Millions of people will not die that otherwise would have. I think thats a pretty good reason don't you? Smokers that enjoy their cigarette breaks and would not quit smoking normally can now and it's relatively pain free with this product. Also those that may try to quit have a 4.5 times better chance of staying tobacco free if they use this product. Have you stayed tobacco free though? The odds are 5:1 that you did not. I hope that you did. I think you really do know that it's not even debatable that e-cigarettes allow more people to quit smoking smoking tobacco cigarettes.
Also it does not defeat the purpose of quitting smoking. Cigarettes kill people e-cigarettes and I'll give you 4,000 reasons why. There are over 4,000 chemicals in cigarettes including tar carcinogens etc. and this kills people. E-cigarettes are as harmless as a cup of coffee in the morning.

I think you are right about tobacco companies coming into the market and using their might to take the whole pie for themselves. I'm predicting that they will be putting loads of R&D money into a better technology that gives more accurate doses of nicotine...if they do they will have the patent for it and be lobbying to make it the only legalised version of ecigs. If this happens, it will be an absolute shame that the biggest criminals in the industry, get to make most of the money from the ingenious innovations of others that were trying to help people addicted to their death devices.

But at least once they put their research money into proving the safety of Ecigs. The general consensus among the worlds governments will have to be to allow Ecigs and Ecig nicotine sales. Currently in Australia our government has banned local nicotine sales and one must personally import less than a 3 month supply of nicotine overseas.

The other thing I'm concerned about is governments trying to protect their tobacco revenues by taxing Ecigs too much. Ecigs should always be much cheaper than smoking cigarettes to encourage people to once and for all stop the cancer sticks.

Let's hope that Ecigs continue to help millions around the world, with or without tobacco companies.
